ADDITIONAL ELECTIVES

ACT Prep

The course will utilize ACT Certified Educator Training, ACT Online Prep, ACT Academy, as well as other ACT Prep resources to offer individualized and group ACT prep. The course facilitator will provide test-taking strategies and resources to prepare students for the ACT in all content areas.

Academic Prep

Students with special circumstances may use this time for homework assignments, completion of projects, additional tutoring, development of good study skills and habits, AP Test practice, and/or enrichment activities based on the student’s interests.

Prerequisites: Qualification for this course will be dependent upon seat availability and student schedules. Priority will be given to students enrolled in 3+ AP classes with remaining seats available to students enrolled in advanced classes.

Beginning Kinesiology

NOTE: THIS IS THE ONLY COURSE THAT FULFILLS THE GRADUATION REQUIREMENT FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION. Individualized fitness plan for lifetime fitness

Health (one semester course) Alabama High School Graduation Requirement

Develops skill for accessing personal health information.

Varsity Baseball

This course covers varsity baseball techniques. Emphasis is placed on refining skills and developing more advanced strategies and techniques. Upon completion, students should be able to play baseball at a competitive level. PREREQUISITE: Completion of the required Beginning Kinesiology course or an approved waiver substitution from the ALSDE Superintendent.

Varsity Basketball

This course covers varsity fundamentals of basketball. Emphasis is placed on skill development, knowledge of the rules, and basic game strategy. Upon completion, students should be able to participate in competitive basketball. PREREQUISITE: Completion of the required Beginning Kinesiology or an approved waiver substitution from the ALSDE Superintendent.

Varsity Cheerleading

This course covers varsity level cheerleading techniques. Emphasis is placed on developing skills, strategies, and techniques. Upon completion, students should be able to participate on a cheerleading squad. PREREQUISITE: Completion of the required Beginning Kinesiology course or an approved waiver substitution from the ALSDE Superintendent.

Varsity Football

This course covers varsity level fundamentals of football. Emphasis is placed on skill development, knowledge of the rules, and basic game strategy. Upon completion, students should be able to participate in competitive football. PREREQUISITE: Completion of the required Beginning Kinesiology course or an approved waiver substitution from the ALSDE Superintendent.

Varsity Golf

This course covers freshman level phases of golf. Emphasis is placed on refining the fundamental skills and learning more phases of the game such as club selection, trouble shots, and course management. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to play competitive golf. PREREQUISITE: Completion of the required Beginning Kinesiology course or an approved waiver substitution from the ALSDE Superintendent.

Varsity Soccer

This course covers varsity fundamentals of soccer. Emphasis is placed on skill development, knowledge of the rules, and basic game strategy. Upon completion, students should be able to participate in competitive soccer. PREREQUISITE: Completion of the required Beginning Kinesiology course or an approved waiver substitution from the ALSDE Superintendent.

Varsity Softball

VISUAL ARTS

VISUAL ART I (Visual Arts Novice)

One full school year/1.0 Credit.
$40.00 course fee.
Open to 9^th-12^th graders.
10^th-12^th grade students may sign up to take the class; there are no prerequisites.
Incoming 9^th graders may take the class with teacher recommendation and/or application. (Ms. Frazier will be working with Ms. Armstrong the AMS Art teacher on this.)
9^th-12^th will be mixed together like choir, band etc; no separate class for 9^th grade.

VISUAL ART II (Visual Arts Intermediate)

One full school year/1.0 Credit.
$40.00 course fee.
Open to 10^th-12^th graders.
Students must apply to take the class.
Students must have taken Art I, or one year of the equivalent at another school.

VISUAL ART III (Visual Arts Accomplished)

One full school year/1.0 Credit.

$40.00 course fee.
Open to 11TH AND12^th graders. (Open to 11^th& 12^th graders starting in 2020-2021)
Students must apply to take the class.
Students must have taken Art I and Art II, or the equivalent at another school.

VISUAL ART IV

One full school year/1.0 Credit.

$40.00 course fee.
Open to 12^th graders. Students must apply to take the class.
Students must have taken Art I, Art II, and Art III, or the equivalent at another school.

PORTFOLIO PREP (Visual Arts Advanced)

One full school year/1.0 Credit.
$40.00 course fee.
Open to 12^th graders only.
Students must apply to take the class.
Must be enrolled in Art III. (Art IV starting in 2021-2022)
Students must have taken Art I & Art II. (Art I, Art II, & Art III in 2021-2022)
Independent study classes, students will be mixed in other art classes. Ideally no more than 1-2 students per class.

Pitch matching; intonation, tone, quality; rhythm; sight reading; practice for special music production.

VocalEase

Symphonic Band

Playing instruments; elements of music; perform; compose; criticism; producing sounds; conducting patterns; demonstrating components essential to the production of characteristic tones, sight-reading unison literature and rhythms; developing full spectrum of scales; developing mastery of rudiments; history.

Symphonic Band 2

PREREQUISITE: INSTRUMENTAL LEVEL I OR APPROVAL OF THE INSTRUCTOR.

Perform; compose; analysis; criticism; history; elements of music; conducting patterns; notate; widen the range of dynamics characteristic sounds; taper releases; sight-read Grade II literature; develop scales and rudiments; play in a wide variety of keys.

Symphonic Band 3

PREREQUISITE: INSTRUMENTAL LEVEL II OR APPROVAL OF THE INSTRUCTOR.

Perform; compose; analysis; criticism; history; characteristic tone in all registers; intonation; balance; sight-read Grade III literature; scales and rudiments required in Level III music standards; notate.

Symphonic Band 4

PREREQUISITE: INSTRUMENTAL LEVEL III OR APPROVAL OF THE INSTRUCTOR.

Perform; compose; analysis; criticism; history; characteristic tone in all registers; intonation; balance; sight-read Grade IV literature; scales and rudiments required in Level IV music standards; notate.
