Albertville board approves renaming of Aggie Stadium, announces key administrative changes

ALBERTVILLE – Aggie Stadium has a new name. 

The board voted Tuesday night to rename the stadium to Vernon Wells Stadium. With unanimous approval, the official name will now be McCord Field at Vernon Wells Stadium.

Vernon Wells is Albertville’s winningest football coach. Eighteen of his 37-year career was as the Aggie head coach (1949-1953, 1973-1985). Coaching honors for Wells include All-Star game head coach, two-time state Coach of the Year, and inductee into the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame, DeKalb County Sports Hall of Fame and Marshall County Sports Hall of Fame. 

Albertville Elementary School Principal Candi McCullars was named the new special education director. Albertville High School principal Jordan Phillips will also take on a new role in the system as the student services director. They will remain at their schools through the end of June and transition to their new roles July 1. 

A reception was held for board member Sandy Elkins. Elkins has served on the school board since 2009 and elected not to continue serving in the position. Earlier this week, the Albertville City Council voted to appoint Amanda Baugh as Elkins replacement. Mrs. Baugh’s term will begin on June 1. 

Also at the meeting, board members elected officers for the next year. Melissa McKee was elected as president of the board, and Annie Furrer will serve as vice-president. They will begin in their positions immediately. 

At the meeting, the board also approved the following items:

  • April financial report. The beginning fund balance was $54,472,269.49. The ending fund balance was $61,137,052.56. The general fund balance is $25,322,331.27. April revenue totaled $10,543,852.91. Expenditures totaled $5,679,343.76.

  • FY24 final budget amendment. 

  • public relations and marketing coordinator and technology director job descriptions.

  • FY24 and FY25 fundraisers.

  • Out of state field trip for the AHS cross country team to travel to Orlando, Fla., Oct. 2-6, 2024, to compete at a high level cross country meet to give the students exposure for recruitment. 

  • Out of state field trip for 60 students across grades 8-12 to travel to the University of Tennessee Space Institute on July 12, 2024, to participate in the Farm to Sea STEM Camp. This camp encourages high school students to pursue STEM-related pathways. Students can expect fun hands-on activities that relate to STEM.

  • Agreement with the Marshall County Technical School for the 2024-2025 school year. This will cover career tech programs not offered by Albertville City Schools. 

  • 2024-2025 student school insurance as submitted by K&K Insurance Group, Inc.

  • Renewal of bid 23-05 Branded Pizza Concept. This will be under the same terms and conditions as the original bid.

A special called board meeting was held on Monday, May 13. Julie Ann McCulley was named the chief academic officer and Dr. Robert Sims will be taking on a new role in the system as the chief operations officer.

In order to continue expediting new hires, Albertville will hold special called board meetings on May 30, June 6 and June 13 in the ACS Boardroom at 7:30 a.m. Board meetings are held at 105 West Main Street in Albertville.
