Albertville BOE holds regular monthly meeting | Painter named assistant principal at AMS

ALBERTVILLE – The Albertville Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting on Oct. 18.

Tori Painter was named the new assistant principal at Albertville Middle School. Prior to her new position, Painter served as the counselor at AMS. She has worked with Albertville City Schools for 15 years.

“We are excited to have Tori. She’s very valuable to our staff and students,” said Albertville Middle School Principal Lance Kitchens.

Albertville Elementary School was highlighted as the School Spotlight for October. Students put together a video about their favorite things about AES. Principal Candi McCullars talked about several of the instructional aspects of AES. She described the new Tier 2 instructional methods as “come and dine instead of the sit and get” of the past. Teachers work daily with small groups of students with similar learning needs using a specific instructional practice or program.

Board President Bobby Stewart thanked McCullars for her leadership and recognized the other teachers in attendance as well.

“You make a difference in our students’ lives. Teachers and coaches all made a difference in ours, and we’re thankful you chose this profession,” said Stewart. “We appreciate all you do, and we’re here to help you where we can.”

In his superintendent’s report, Dr. Boyd K. English updated the Board on the progress of the three major capital projects going on in Albertville City Schools – the Multi-Purpose Facility, Career Academy and Band Hall. All three projects should be up and going by January.

Progress is continuing to be made at the construction site for the Multi-Purpose Facility. A pre-construction meeting will take place on Nov. 3 for the Career Academy. After that meeting, equipment will begin arriving, and a start date will be set. The system is waiting on final approval of the band hall plans by Governor Kay Ivey. Once that is received, a pre-construction meeting date will be set for it as well.

Dr. English also gave an update on fiscal year 24 from the Alabama State Department of Education. He recognized October as National Principals Month and shared the celebrations from National School Lunch Week, which was held Oct. 3-7 across all schools in the system. Child Nutrition Program staff and leaders dressed in the “Peace, Love and Lunch” theme, and students voted on their favorite meal to have that week and received free ice cream.

Technology Coach Spring Charles was recognized as being selected to present at the 2022 Pathway Conference presented by Woz Ed. The conference takes place Nov. 2-4 in Scottsdale, Ariz., and features innovative educators in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Albertville City Schools is the only system in Alabama to be asked to present.

Executive Director of Education Beth Rigsby presented the achievement data baselines to the board and gave an overview of instructional plans moving forward. Andy Jones, Executive Director of Federal Programs, gave an update on the short and long-term goals of the EL Pilot Academy model.
